International Superstar Shakira announces her brand new single Did It Again, available from December 2009. Did It Again follows her massive hit She Wolf, which remained in the UK top 5 for 5 weeks. The album She Wolf entered the album chart at number 4 making it Shakira’s fastest selling album to date in the UK. The video for Did It Again was directed by Jake Nava. Needless to say, it is just as hot, innovative and mind-blowing as the much talked about video for She Wolf.
2009 is the year of the She Wolf, not only has the album gained commercial success, but it was released to incredible reviews.
Shakira boasts a string of chart-topping hits in both English and Spanish and sales of over 50 million records. Her last project, Oral Fixation Volumes 1&2, has sold in excess of 8 million albums worldwide with the singles La Tortura and Hips Don’t Lie having earned over 10 million digital downloads.
Grammy-winning musician Shakira took the stage in England on Monday - but not to sing. In a speech at Oxford University, she put out a call for universal access to education as a tool for world peace. “That is how I want the youth of 2060 to see us: That our mission for global peace consisted of sending 30,000 educators to Afghanistan, not 30,000 soldiers,” said Shakira, who was invited by the Oxford Student Union. “That in 2010, world education became more important than world domination.”
I originally wrote this several years ago, as you can probably tell from the dated references. It’s fun to read in retrospect though.
Waiting for the next installment of “Secret War”, I decided it was time for a rant. Why would anyone put out a quarterly comic? It just isn’t natural to wait three months for the next installment in a serial. That is four comics per year. This kind of schedule has plagued several good projects in the last few years.
Bill Willingham’s “Pantheon” came out every third month. This twelve issue mini-series was one-of-a-kind, complete with a checkoff list so you could keep track of the characters as they died off. But by the time the next due date rolled around every three, I had almost forgot I was interested. If you were in to the end, you had to wait around a full three years for the payoff. I fell out of the loop, though a friend of mine toughed it out and I eventually read the entire run.
Alan Moore’s work on The Youngblood and Supreme had the same delays. They were great comics. In both cases, Mr. Moore took failed premises and made them highly readable. But due to the implosions at Image Comics at the time, it took two and sometimes three months for the next installment to arrive. As far as I know, both series eventually just ended, without any warning.
Now I understand there is a big difference in the late comic and the quarterly. Marvel is reliable and the “Secret War” will be finished. But I just cannot understand why Marvel Comics would choose to release a big seller on such a schedule. In many ways, it is more inexplicable than the aforementioned examples. It compare it to the television show that is continually pre-empted by the network. How do you expect to build an audience?

I finally rented “Million Dollar Baby” just because good old Clint Eastwood is in the movie. I have to say I was entertained with the dialogue going on between Clint and Morgan Freeman. Clint had a lot of great lines that were actually quite funny in this tragic motion picture.
Somewhere down the line, I had gotten the impression it was a female Rocky story. Hilary Swank plays Maggie Fitzgerald a female boxer who seeks Clint’s character Frankie Dunn to train her. After lots of harassment (which reminds me of Clint’s line from “The Gauntlet”, “Nag, Nag, Nag!”), he does train her and she gets a title fight. Right there we should have gotten a great Rocky like fight scene of triumph, but all we the viewers got was tragedy.
I don’t want to ruin the movie for those of you who haven’t seen it. After all it was a great movie in the sense the acting was outstanding, and the characters were brilliant, but I personally like a happy ending. Maybe it’s just the optimist in me, but I like movies that inspire, encourage, or generally put me in a good mood.
The movie fails in the one respect for me that it doesn’t end up anywhere. It’s a very interesting heart wrenching ride that lands no where. More and more movies are ending in despair lately. I guess it’s a trend. For instance Clint’s character believes in God, and goes to Church everyday, apparently trying to make up for a sin in his past. I almost expected an ending where his character might at least find some sort of inspiration from God, or that he might settle the issue he felt he needed forgiveness for. Apparently, he had a big problem with his daughter that caused this guilt. That issue was never resolved. Clint’s last action on this movie will shock you as well as discourage you. I won’t tell you what it was, but a lot of people are going to or have already found it morally disturbing.
This isn’t the only movie or even TV show I’ve seen lately that ends tragically. Is Hollywood becoming so filled with despair that they can no longer create a story of encouragement or inspiration?
The bottom line is the movie is great technically and entertaining for a while till you get closer to the ending, but personally I hate watching anything that makes me feel worse than before I started watching. Too bad there wasn’t a rerun of “Any Which Way But Loose” on.
