Richard Ashby won the $1,500 buy-in Seven-Card Stud tournament (Event #21) at the World Series of Poker on Saturday night to claim the $140,467 first-place prize.
Ashby, age 38, is primarily an online cash game specialist who lives in Watford, England.
He is the third Englishman to win a gold bracelet at this year’s WSOP, following in the footsteps of previous U.K. champions, Praz Bansi and James Dempsey. Christine Pietsch barely missed becoming the 16th woman in history to win an open WSOP event. She had a big chip lead when heads up play began, but Ashby proved to be a formidable opponent in the duel, leaving the lady from Orange County, Calif., in second place.
he final hand of the tournament came when Ashby’s (queen-queen) three-seven-nine-seven (jack) Pietsch’s (king-10) jack-eight-10-ace (two). Ashby made two pair - Qs and 7s - which bested Pietsch’s pair of tens.
Pietsch would have joined an illustrious group of female champions, including Jennifer Harman, Annette Obrestad, Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert, Cyndy Violette, and Vanessa Selbst, among others. Selbst was the last woman to win the most coveted of all poker jewelry, which took place in Event #19 at the 2008 WSOP.
Ashby’s poker accomplishments include cashes in the Aussie Millions, European Poker Championship, Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, Irish Open, and several other majors played in the UK and Europe. Prior to this victory, Ashby’s biggest cash was at the 2009 Aussie Millions, at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

Robl had top pair, and perhaps a usable underpair to use for a set if a jack came out. Antonius had 9 high, but he had a flush draw, and the wrap straight draw. With a 5, 6, 8, or any diamond, Antonius would take the lead. As happens often in high stakes cash games, before the players turned over their cards, they agreed to run the turn and river 4 times. The cards were displayed and it was shown that Antonius should win 75% to robl’s 25%. He was a 3-1 favorite with 4 chances to hit his multiple draws. Robl won all 4 of the boards, which host Bart Hansen said has less than 1% of a chance to happen. Sometimes, having the best odds to win does not mean you will win; even with 4 chances!
‘Getting cute’ is a term used by poker and online poker players to signify when they or another player are acting out of the line of what would be expected in most general circumstances, in hope of throwing a kink into their opponents’ gears.
