Do you know exactly what actions you need to do today to be on track to reaching your big, long-term goals?
Do you know which actions should be done first to make today a success?
If not, don’t worry about it right now. By the end of this article, you will have the tools and techniques you need to answer a confident YES to both these questions.
By the way, most entrepreneurs and small business owners cannot answer Yes to both these questions. Many of them hop from task to task and work very hard at their businesses, but the results they desire don’t happen.
You may be wondering how these these people can work so hard, yet not achieve their long-term goals. One big reason is that hard work alone doesn’t make a business successful. There are many other factors that come into play.
Two of the most important factors are these:
1) Using a daily task list
2) Doing “Big Rock” priorities first
You’ve probably heard of using a daily task list before, but do you do it? I used to overcomplicate things by writing down my tasks all over the place — sometimes in my day planner, sometimes on post-it notes, sometimes on spare sheets of note paper, etc. By doing it that way it was easy for my mind to get distracted and not make much progress toward my big goals each day.
What I’ve found works best for me is to keep my daily planning system as simple as possible. What I do now is keep one sheet of paper as my Master Task List and another
sheet of paper as my Daily Task List. And I carry both sheets of paper in my pocket at all times.
Your Master Task List is a list of all the tasks that you want to do for your business. This list grows and grows as you think of new ideas and plan out the achievement of your long-term goals. Of course, when you finish a task, you cross it off the list.
Your Daily Task List contains just your tasks listed for today. You should write out your daily list once a day, either just before going to bed or right when you wake up in the morning.
But here’s the critical part of this daily list. You only list the most important 3-5 tasks that you want to do today to move your business forward. Don’t list all the little things — just the big ones. Some people call these tasks the “Big Rock” items.
The term “Big Rocks” comes from a demonstration that time management professionals have often done in front of a room. It goes something like this…
Imagine you are sitting in the audience and in front of the room you see a large, clear crystal vase sitting on a table. The vase is empty and several rocks are sitting beside it. As you look closer at the rocks, you can see that they basically can be grouped into two
different sizes — big and little.
The presenter in front of the room tells you that the vase represents the amount of time you have each day and the rocks represent all the tasks you want to get done. He goes on to say that what most business owners do is to do the easy, smaller tasks first. And as he
says this, he puts most of the smaller rocks into the bottom of the vase.
But when it comes time to get the big tasks done, they don’t fit into your day anymore. And as he says this, he begins placing the big rocks into the vase, but none of them can fit.
He then says, “Let’s try it again, but this time with the big rocks first.” He empties the contents of the vase and puts all three of the big rocks in. And they fit this time!
Then he puts in the little rocks and they all fit too! The little rocks find resting places between and all around the big rocks. Even though this is a simple exercise, it has a profoundly important message for you and your business. And that is this…
Focusing on doing your Big rocks first everyday is one of the keys to big results, more profits and more free time! As you plan out your day today (or tomorrow if you are reading this late in the day), make sure to pick your top one, two, or three big rocks and attack them as soon as you can during the day. If you can’t do them right away, at least schedule the time to do them in your planner so you can set aside time today to get them done.
In his bestselling books and seminars, Og Mandino has often said that one of your secrets to success is to live each day in a daytight compartment. This means to live your life focused on what you can accomplish in the 24 hours that are in front of you right now. Live today as if it’s all you have and focus on the top priority tasks that you need to complete before the 24 hours is up.
Og’s discussion of daytight compartments also refers to not dwelling on mistakes of the past or worries about the future. Instead, focus your efforts on what you can do today and you’ll see the results start pouring in for you as each productive day passes.
The great Earl Nightingale once said that “Successful people form the habit of doing what failures don’t like to do. They like the results they get by doing what they don’t necessarily enjoy.”
Earl is saying that you’ll often be faced with having to do unenjoyable tasks from time to time. And a lot of the time these unenjoyable tasks are your big rocks for the day. So instead of procrastinating, go out there and get it done!
Tom Hopkins said it a little differently:
“Every evening, write down the six most important things that you must do the next day (for your business). Then while you sleep your subconscious will work on the best ways for you to accomplish them. Your next day will go much more smoothly.”
Take a tip from the experts like Og, Earl, and Tom and go out there and make it happen today. Take the time to write out your Daily Task List for the day and carry it with you everywhere. And when you complete one of your Big Rocks, cross it off the list with a smile!

Speed dating is one of the freshest dating movements in
the United States and United Kingdom and continues to spread
quickly to the rest of the world. It draws so many people
because of its exciting, fast and no pressure way to meet other
singles. At one event, you will come into contact with a number
of people and participate in quick one-on-one conversations.
This process eliminates the stress of going out, finding someone
attractive and working up the courage to break the ice. There
are no long, expensive dinners or blind dates without chemistry.
The people at these events are there simply because they are
serious about finding the right person to date.
Speed dating can vary at each individual event as far as the
number of participants and the amount of time you are allowed to
‘date’, but the general idea is the same for all of them. You
need to find an upcoming meeting in your area and register in
advance. The registration helps the coordinators assure the
ratio of men to women attending are the same.
First, an equal group of single men and women gather together at
a predestined location. Most of the time the gathering room is
filled with ‘tables for two’ and each table is marked with a
letter or number. You are then paired up with your first ‘date’
and normally allowed between 3 to 8 minutes to get to ask each
other questions. At the end of this time, you move on to your
next ‘date’ and begin again.
If you would like to see more of one of your ‘dates’, you have a
dating card to either check a box or write down a name of the
person that you would like to see again. Sometimes you can even
log onto a web site after the event and enter the names of those
you wish to have a second date with. Whenever two individuals
‘match up’ after submitting this information, contact
information is provided to both so that a second meeting can be
set up.
While this process might sound intimidating, most people who
have braved one event find that it is not that bad and can even
be an efficient way of meeting new people. The trick is to try
to connect or relate to each other as speedily as possible.
The concept is very simple with speed dating. Showing up with a
prepared list of original questions that mean something to you
is probably a good idea and can help as an indicator as to whom
you might want to see again. You’ve got nothing to loose by
registering, preparing some questions and showing up with an
open mind. Try to enjoy yourself and have fun with your speed
dates!
How can you keep warm in winter?
I remember the movie The Day After Tomorrow. Where the people
were facing an ice age ahead, with temperatures so cold your
blood could freeze instantly.
Everyone was working hard on keeping warm. They were hiding in a
library which was really convenient. You wouldn’t run out of
things to burn in a library that is full of books. In their
effort to stay warm, they kept their fireplace ablaze by burning
library books, feeding the fire continually for that much needed
warmth.
A homeless guy who had to survive winter in the streets crushed
up paper and stuffed his clothes with them for insulation.
Insulate your clothing to keep the warmth in and the cold out.
Crushing the paper trapped air. Air is a great insulator of
heat. So that made a lot of sense.
#1 Generate heat.
To generate heat, most modern homes have a proper heating
system. Just make sure you pay your heating bills. If you can’t
pay the bills, get your bills paid on your behalf. For example,
if you are a U.S. resident, here’s where you can get free
heating.
If you use an old fashion log fireplace, stock up on plenty of
firewood in case you get snowed in.
#2 Layer your clothing
Wear layers of clothing to keep warm. Start off with a base
layer. The thermal
underwear. Ideally, your thermal underwear should fit like
second skin. The goal is to keep your body heat in. Pure cotton
thermal underwear would probably work if the temperature is
above 5 degrees celsius. Colder than that and you need something
much warmer. Like merino
wool. Or a base layer that is suitable for snow sports, like
the Duofold
Insulayer thermal underwear which has 2 layers of fabric
that trap air between the layers, for added insulation.
On top of the thermal underwear, you might want to wear a wool
sweater and thick denim jeans
or wool pants. You might want to add on a warm jacket or even a
trenchcoat over the sweater. Depending on the severity of cold
you might face, you might want to add more layers. Don’t forget
your gloves , scarve, woolen hat, ear muffs and boots. If it is
really very cold, you might even need a ski mask.
#3 Drink warming liquids
Drinking a cup of ginger tea helps you body fight the cold too.
Drinking plenty of hot soup at meals warms up the body
beautifully.
#4 Bring a warm shawl
Carry along a cashmere
throw, or at least a wool wrap with you so you can wrap that
around you when you need additional warmth.
#5 Keep one another warm
Finally, huddle up close to a loved warm so you can keep each
other warm. That’s how our ancestors survived the cold winters
when they lived in caves. They would huddle close together near
the fire to keep warm.
I have found that the key to being able to work happily and successfully from home is to create a strong structure for your working days.
If you work with other people, you are automatically part of a dynamic system which demands your participation. It may sound blissful to be away from the office politics and the constant interruptions, but it is difficult to achieve anything if it feels as though you are all alone and there are no consequences if you don’t get on with your work.
I have developed the following habits for building a structure for home working through trial and (much) error:
1. Have an established routine for starting your day. For example, after breakfast, browse websites you have found in magazine and newspaper articles or promotional material, have a look at your favourite newspaper’s site, log into your business bank account, and check your e-mails - suddenly you are into work mode without any pain!
2. Make your phone calls straightaway - speaking to other people will give you energy and will probably provide some deadlines or help to prioritise your work.
3. Make yourself part of a web of business associates which may include any or all of the following - clients, suppliers, sub-contractors, employees, people doing a similar job. The more you feel part of something outside yourself and your own home, the more motivated you will feel.
4. Go along to networking and training events - never think you ‘don’t have time’. Taking a break away from your desk will re-energise you and give you fresh ideas for tackling problems which seem insoluble if you keep going over and over them.
5. If it’s all getting heavy and too much like hard work - stop and do something you enjoy, preferably away from home. Go for a walk, get a coffee at your local cafe, meet a friend. When you come back, you will be in a totally different frame of mind and what was so difficult before will just flow.
6. You have the flexibility your office-bound friends are so envious of, so use it! Combine something you enjoy with a business errand - after a business meeting, have lunch out, do some shopping, have a walk in the park.
7. Remember that sometimes it is just really hard and you may feel overwhelmed. At times like this, refer immediately to point 5 above!
