Collectors of Depression Glass find not only its beautiful
colors fascinating, but its patterns, as well. With many
glass producers making this type of glass, as you can
imagine, many patterns resulted, creating a wide array of
pretty, practical, and inexpensive glassware affordable to
every American household in that lean era of history and
making Depression Glass one of the most collectible items
today.

Of the many glass manufacturers that produced Depression
Glass, seven of them became major players in the field,
creating a total of 92 designs. Below you’ll find some
history, some trivia, some folklore, and some interesting
characteristics about several of these designs.

Pattern: Cameo

This Depression Glass design, sometimes referred to as
Ballerina or Dancing Girl, gets its name from the tiny
dancer found on all its pieces. Some claim the Hocking
Glass Company that manufactured Cameo glass created the
pattern to honor the legendary modern dancer of the 1920s,
Isadora Duncan, who tragically died when her long trailing
scarf, of which she’d made her personal trademark, choked
her to death when it wrapped around the wheel of her moving
Bugatti roadster.

Duncan died in 1927, and the Cameo pattern came into being
in 1930, continuing to be produced until 1934, so the story
could very well be true. Regardless of the inspiration for
this pattern of Depression Glass, it continues as a much
sought-after design. Hocking made most Cameo glass in
green, but pink, yellow, and - more rarely - crystal, which
can occasionally still be found.

Pattern: Avocado

First produced in 1923, the Avocado or “Sweet Pear” pattern
claims its fame for being the very first ‘true’ Depression Glass
design. Made by the Indiana Glass Company, Avocado pieces
in the form of pitchers prove to be the most difficult to
find, possibly because of this pattern’s age. Indiana
continued manufacturing Avocado for 10 years, until the
company retired this Art Nouveau-type design in 1933.

Pattern: Royal Lace

The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company began producing Royal Lace
during 1934 as a set consisting of 28 pieces. Today, Royal
Lace holds the honor of being some of the costliest Depression
glass that collectors covet. Hazel-Atlas manufactured Royal
Lace in crystal (clear) and in five colors: green, yellow,
pink, blue, and burgundy. The most desirable color
consistently proves to be the blue, called Ritz Blue by the
company, which actually came about as an economic accident.

When General Mills ended a deal with Hazel-Atlas’ using
blue-colored glass in a Shirley Temple promotional campaign
in 1936, Hazel-Atlas simply poured the leftover vats of
molten blue glass into its existing Royal Lace molds to
avoid wasting it. An instant success resulted. Blue Royal
Lace Depression Glass reigns to this day as 1 of the most sought
after and is now 1 of the most expensive of all the other
Depression Glass patterns.

These samplings of interesting Depression Glass trivia make
collecting it all that more appealing. After all, how many
other pieces of glassware can be found in people’s homes
that come with a ready-made story - at least those people
in the median income range (We’re not talking Tiffany or
Lalique here!)? And these have been gleaned from a mere
sampling of the plethora of Depression Glass designs that
have survived over the years. Imagine what stories can be
found!

The next time you gaze at that lovely piece of Depression
glass resting in the window of your favorite antique dealer
or - if you’re lucky - sitting on a dusty shelf at a flea
market just waiting for you to discover it, remember:
Whatever pattern it is, a good chance exists that it, too,
will have a fascinating history.

So take a chance. Buy it!
Until next time,

Over the years I have learned a great many things since entering the holistic field. The biggest discovery was that the more I learned, the more questions I had. This is true for any field, but even more so in metaphysics.
I have found that there is a great deal of confusion both in and out of the metaphysical world about auras, energy and intuition.
The first concept to understand is that quantum physics teaches that EVERYTHING is energy. Physicists postulate that only five to ten percent of the entire universe is actually physical matter. The rest is all energy vibrating at differing frequencies, which cause the different densities from the thickest steel to the air we breathe. Anything from your car, to the tree out front, to you yourself are all made of energy.
Now you must be thinking, wow ok I’m energy, but you are only taking into account your physical body. Yes your physical body is energy but there is more to it than that. Your energetic body extends beyond the physical body. This, in a nut shell, is your aura.
Many people have been taught to extend or fluff out their auras as far as possible. This is the opposite of what should be done. Many people believe that their intuition is somehow connected to their aura. They believe they will be more intuitive if their aura is extended. Intuition and your aura are two different things.
The aura is an energetically and magnetically based field that is an extension of our chakras. It can indicate our physical, mental and spiritual states. Looking at an aura can be similar to a medical doctor checking our ears, nose and throat for symptoms of infection.
Intuition, however, comes from the secretions of the pineal gland located in the center of the brain, between the eyebrows.
Your aura should be kept as close to your skin as possible. Here is an example of why: A friend of mine used to live and work in Manhattan and he learned really quickly to keep his aura close to his skin. It took him awhile to realize what was happening, with his aura so fluffed out he was going through hundreds if not thousands of other people’s aura fields through out his day, in doing so he was picking up other peoples emotional, mental and spiritual stuff. He was getting halfway through his day and he felt like he had been running all day. Once he started pulling his aura close to his skin everyday he felt much better and had energy at the end of the day. You see, not only will other peoples stuff stick to your aura there are some people who will drain your energy because they have so depleted their energy they have to get it from others to replenish themselves.
That is why we teach our clients to connect to their version of divinity to replenish their energies. Whether that be, Gia, Universal Spirit, the earth, God, Buddha, Et Al.
If you’re sensitive to your aura or your overall energy, the next time you’re going to be in a crowded situation pull your aura close to your skin and see how you feel at the end of the evening. And then think back to how you feel now verses how you felt the last time you were in a crowded social situation. I am willing to bet you will feel worlds better then you did last time.
It does take practice to keep your aura close to your skin. You will want to check it periodically though out the gathering. At this point you’re probably thinking, ok this all makes sense I’ll try to pull my aura in. As Yoda says “there is no try, only do or do not”. What you want to do is find the edge of your energy field of your lower arm, mine is about an inch from my body which is ok since I am alone at the moment, once you have found the edge of your field that can be your reference point. Now imagine your energy field is the air around you and just breath it in, so you have the same amount of energy it’s just in a smaller area, closer to your skin now.
When you first start trying this technique it may seem like your having to struggle. If you’re struggling then your trying to hard, just relax, breath and if your intention is for your aura to come down to your skin it will.
Once you realize that your aura and your intuition are not related you can begin to work on building your intuition.
I spoke a little bit about intuition at the beginning of this article. The best way I can describe intuition is it’s that little voice that tells go the other way to work, then you find out later there was a major crash on your normal route that would have made you late for work. Or that feeling you have that something is wrong with someone you pass in the street. All of those things and lots more are examples of your intuition trying to give you additional information about the world around you. Some people call it the sixth sense and I suppose you could call it that but I prefer intuition, it has a less new age ring to it.
Most people, myself included start off noticing their intuition after something has happened. Once you realize its happening and will take note of it you can begin to use your intuition more productively. The biggest problem I have found with using my intuition is getting out of my own way to allow my intuition to guide me not only during healing sessions but in my everyday life.

According to history, the first vacuum cleaner actually wasn’t a vacuum cleaner at all, it was a carpet sweeper. The inventor was a man by the name of Daniel Hess who in 1860 patented a machine that had rotating brushes on the bottom and bellows to generate suction. There is however no evidence that this machine was ever produced. It would be some forty plus years later, in 1908, that Mr. James Spangler of Canton, Ohio would receive a patent for the first electric portable vacuum cleaner. And, it was his cousin-in-law, William Hoover, who lent his name to the legendary company that still produces vacuums today.

For more than one hundred and forty years the vacuum cleaner has been improved upon. Whether you are doing your weekly vacuuming of your home, doing a thorough spring cleaning (including vacuuming the furniture, and all the dust balls that have gathered behind it), or, leaving the vacuuming up to the robot, there is a vacuum suited to your need. Upright or canister, hepa filtered, bagged or bagless, there is an endless array of vacuums on the market today.

A vacuum actually cleans in two ways. The first, and the job we rate a vacuum on most is how the vacuum actually picks up debris and dirt from a carpet, or floor. When you are looking for a vacuum keep in mind the power of the suction motor, this is critical for good performance. The second, and not so often thought about, is how well the vacuum filters the air it puts back into the home. For those with allergy problems a hepa vacuum might be the best choice. Some of these hepa vacuums can filter out over 99% of pollens, household dust and other allergens.

Then, there is the choice of canister or upright vacuum. This is strictly based on personal preference. Both types of vacuums have pluses and minuses. Canister vacuum heads will be able to reach under your furniture, and will be easier to use when vacuuming the stairs. Canister vacuums generally have a retractable electrical cord, which is much more convenient than wrapping the cord back around the vacuum neck. It is easier to push the lightweight vacuum head of a canister as opposed to pushing an upright vacuum. Some say they prefer to have the vacuum in front of them, which is why they like an upright. They don’t like dragging the vacuum behind them. Upright vacuum cleaner bags tend to be larger than bags used in canister vacuums so they need to be changed less frequently.

Philip Diehl first invented the ceiling fan in 1882, around the same time electricity was beginning to spread into homes and businesses throughout the country. Over the next decade, Diehl improved his original idea and made it more practical. Two improvements were that he made the motor smaller and added electric lights. By the 1920’s, ceiling fans were found all over the country and soon spread to the rest of the world.

The basic idea behind the ceiling fan has remained relatively unchanged since its creation. Ceiling fans make a breeze or suck up air in order to make a room feel more comfortable. A small motor contained within the ceiling fan turns the fan blades. The blades come in various lengths, depending on how big the room that needs to be conditioned is. Standard ceiling fan blades are made out of wood and are between 32 and 52 inches long. That measurement is from the tip of one blade to the tip of the blade opposite it. Ceiling fan blades are mounted at a 12- to 15-degree angle in order to properly spread the air. Ceiling fans normally have either four or five blades that have to be balanced around the fan so that it will not rattle or shake when it is in operation.

Some aspects of ceiling fans have been updated over the years. The inventor of the original ceiling fan, Philip Diehl, made a number of improvements on his first model. He started using smaller motors and added electric lights to the fans. He called the ones with lights “Electroliers” because they were combinations of electric ceiling fans and chandeliers. Fans also changed in the ways they could be mounted. Down-rods enable the entire contraption to be mounted on a high or vaulted ceiling.

Ceiling fans can save consumers energy and money. They can lower the temperature of a room by as much as 6-degrees and use much less energy than air conditioners.

Think of how many people this wedding made happy! Don&#39t let yourselves mislead by the Britons&#39 malice, but think instead of how rewarding was such an event for their taste for mockery! For example the T-shirt with Charles sitting atop a horse with the face of Camilla, was a huge success and was available in a shop right in the vicinity of the Windsor Castle.

Well, there were more than T-shirts to it: pens, towels, plates, spoons, bookmarks, mugs and all sorts of trifles — some simply commemorative, some with a tinge of ill will. Very successful were the limited editions of memorabilia with the initial wedding date printed — April 8.

Among the best sellers however were the cheap replicas of Camilla&#39s diamond engagement ring, which were sold almost instantly.

The original ring is a heirloom — it belonged to the late Queen Mother. The much-talked-about royal engagement ring is an Art Deco model, made of platinum and has an emerald-cut diamond in the center and three diamond baguettes on both sides. Although not a very popular cut, as it is not very complimentary of the stone and shows less brilliance and fire, the emerald cut has an aristocratic grace. The ring is a really fine piece of jewelry.

The copies of the ring that were put on sale four days ahead of the initial wedding date were of silver and cubic zirconia and cost ₤19 or $37. Some 2,500 items were offered by ASDA, a subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. A more expensive version of the ring is planned to be produced, this time with real diamonds and made to order. It is estimated at about ₤30,000 or $56,000.

Buy HUD homes are sometimes the cheapest option available for a common man to own a house. The fact that teachers and police officers could buy HUD homes at 50% off the market value attracts more potential buyers.

Before starting off hunting around to buy HUD homes, let us see what actually a HUD home is? HUD homes are those dwellings that have been acquired by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. When a home owner fails to meet the payments of a HUD insured mortgage, it results in the home getting foreclosed by the mortgage lender. He then transfers the ownership of the house to HUD and collects the money owed to it. HUD homes are then put for sale at the current market rate with the aim of selling it off quickly and recovering the money. It in fact offers a cheap option for those looking to buy HUD homes.

Buy HUD homes options vary from family residences and townhouses, condominiums and other types of residential properties. It is a cheapest and later profitable option to buy HUD homes for common man as well as potential investors. While a common man sees buy HUD homes as a way to earn a house for him and family, an investor taps the economic potential in re-selling it at a higher price to some body ready to buy HUD homes. Other home buyers are motivated in buy HUD homes at below market value because it allows them to acquire a larger home than they could normally afford to purchase.

In fact, any one can buy HUD homes. But in order to buy HUD homes, he/she should have a pre-approved mortgage or is in possession of a verifiable amount of cash for purchase. But the price ranges are such that any low or moderately salaried American can buy HUD homes. And on the race for buy HUD homes, an owner-occupant has preference over other buyers if he/she is deciding to buy HUD homes as his/her primary residence. But this privilege is valid only for a certain period, beyond which the home will be available to other qualified persons looking for buy HUD homes.

In order to buy HUD homes, one can strike the deal only through real estate agents approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Approved agents can submit bids during any day of a week, from which the highest net bid is chosen. If there is no acceptable bid to buy HUD homes, the home is put to new bidding until sold.
On the acceptance of a bid to buy HUD homes, the agent will be notified within 48 hours. The settlement is usually completed within one to two months, during which time financing is arranged and the sale is closed. If you do not close by the settlement date, your earnest money deposit is forfeited else you have to pay for an extension of the sales contract.

For those looking to buy HUD homes, since HUD homes are sold in a ‘as-is’ basis, conducting a professional home inspection before submitting a bid is recommended. The customers who buy HUD homes need to pay for any repairs/maintenance - those expenses would not be paid by HUD. After you buy HUD homes, the selling commission will be paid by HUD only if such a condition is there in your offer.

To buy HUD homes, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development does not provide home loans directly. One can make use of the several insurance mortgage programs available to buy HUD homes.

Bleach products must be the most commonly found cleaning products in households, and offices complexes are not far behind. Go into most household toilets and you will probably find a bleach product. Go into office toilets which are only cleaned by contract cleaners once, twice or three times a week and you will probably find a container of bleach of some description nestling either on the window sill or by the toilet bowl, especially in the ‘ladies’ toilets. Males do not seem to have the same reliance on bleach, or they simply do not think about clean toilets!

What is this fascination that we seem to have with bleach not as a whitener but as a cleaner? Is it effective as a disinfectant? Yes, because the alkaline nature of the bleach plus the small amounts of chloride ions produced are both effective at killing bacteria and viruses. Is it effective as a whitener? Yes, because on contact with water it produces free oxygen radicals that will oxidise some coloured pigments. Hence the bleaching effect. Oxygen radicals are also effective disinfectants so aid in destroying harmful organisms.

However what are the cleaning properties of bleach? They would appear to be minimal. Does bleach remove dirt? Does bleach remove staining in toilet bowls? The answer to all these would seem to be no it does not. What the bleach is in fact doing is rendering the stain or the dirt transparent. It is bleaching it. It is still there but not visible!

So householders quite happily soak there toilet bowls with bleach. This gets them clean with the minimum of effort and has the added bonus that they smell ‘clean’. The porcelain will certainly look clean and shiny but in reality it is not you just cannot see it any more as it has been bleached!

I believe we rely so much on bleach because of past usage by our parents and grand parents and it gives the effect of looking clean and most importantly it smells clean. Psychologically we see it clean, we smell it clean and all the nasty ‘germs’ have been killed so it must be clean. In reality it is a trick, the dirt or the stain is still there we just cannot see it, and whatever odours were around are being masked by the smell of chlorine, the clean smell. Like mould that has been treated with bleach they will return!

Further articles on our fascination with bleach will be appearing shortly.

A bathroom designs idea - can I really design my own bathroom? Why not! Today, the bathroom is much more than just a room for grooming and a place to read. Bathrooms can be a good place for home exercise equipment and a good music system or TV, for example. What better way to unwind from the day than a soothing shower or warm soak in the tub with candles and relaxing music. So start a notebook. When you get a bathroom designs idea, write it down. Soon you will have defined the bathroom that is just right for you.

Design my own bathroom? You bet you can! When designing your own bathroom, some of the questions you should ask (and answer) include:

1. How big will the bathroom be? Bathroom sizes include:

• Master bathroom or luxury bathroom - includes toilet, bidet, two sinks, separate tub and shower, whirpool or spa and perhaps more, depending on your budget. Some master bathrooms are large enough to have exercise equipment, and they are subdivided into smaller compartments for privacy depending on what is needed.

• Full bathroom - includes toilet, sink, and combination tub/shower plumbed along one wall. Typical dimensions are 5×7 or 5×8 feet.

• Half bathroom - includes sink and toilet only. It can be placed on the main floor of your home to reduce the morning rush, and the family doesn’t have to go upstairs to use the toilet. Common dimensions are between 3×6 and 4×5 feet, about the size of a smaller closet.

• Small bathroom - includes corner shower stall, toilet and sink and typical dimensions are 6×6 feet.

• Childrens bathroom - can be a three-quarter bathroom or full bathroom depending on the size of your home and how many children you have. Children’s bathrooms should have plenty of storage and cubbies that are safe and colorful. If several kids will use the same bathroom, a wall or half wall between the toilet and the rest of the bathroom may be a good idea.

• Guest bathroom - can be a three-quarter bathroom or a full bathroom.

2. Are you planning to have convenient storage in the bathroom? A design my own bathroom person will always include bathroom storage. You can find a combination sink/vanity for extra storage. A great bathroom designs idea is you can never have too much bathroom storage!

Use the wall space wisely with shelves or cabinets over the commode or almost anywhere in the bathroom. Consider using corner shelves, and hang towel bars above one another. Add a medicine cabinet with mirror to your bathroom to store grooming supplies, medicine or toiletries. Traditionally, the medicine cabinet was always located above the vanity or sink, but nowadays you can place it elsewhere in the bathroom. Add a shower caddy to your corner shower for extra storage.

3. Do you have enough lighting planned for your bathroom? Natural light is an important element in bathrooms. A window, a wall or roof skylight will bring in natural light, a view or a dramatic skyscape. Having a skylight that opens is great because moisture build-up is reduced.

Artificial lighting is also vital and often overlooked in a bathroom. Without good lighting, the decor and the personality of your bathroom can not be developed properly. Lighting for your bathroom can be natural and manufactured. Lighting should be used to brighten and define the space since both can affect your mood and how you feel inside your home.

4. Another bathroom designs idea - what about ventilation? If you live in climates prone to mold and mildew, you should install an exhaust fan in your bathroom. Ventilating fans are sized by the number of cubic feet of air they move each minute (cfm). A design my own bathroom person will have a good ventilation system that can move the air from the bathroom to the outdoors about eight times per hour or once every 7 or 8 minutes. Bathrooms generate humidity and moisture that can penetrate ceilings, floors and countertops. Remove odors and humidity from a bathroom by installing a power ventilator large enough to do the job. You do not want your walls to break into a sweat every time someone showers.

Design my own bathroom? Go for it! A design my own bathroom person will read as much as possible, thinking through what is wanted and needed in this important room. A bathroom designs idea will range from materials used to the bathroom layout to the finished colors. Having a successful bathroom project is about making informed decisions while planning and while building. Continue the process of learning as much as you can before building begins. How much can you spend, what style will the bathroom be, what size ventilation should you have and so on. Your answer to each bathroom designs idea question is what will guide you so you’ll have the best bathroom ever.
